Today we finally got the opportunity to try Elani with our ducks, mainly to observe how she reacted to them. We only have 3 Indian Runner ducks at the moment and since one of them is sitting on a nest of eggs, we could only use two ducks for herding. Perhaps it was not the best test, but we wanted to see what Elani would do. The moment she saw them, she moved forward and began to began to herd them. At first we had her on a long rope, but once we could see that she had no intention of eating the ducks, we turned her loose. She did her best to keep the ducks together, working calmly and with a good degree of concentration.
Our yard is quite large and the ducks ran all over the place, not following me at all. This made it difficult for Elani to know where to put pressure, but she did try, moving opposite me behind the ducks. She seemed to show a natural balance, but this was NOT a good test for that, since the ducks were so wild and crazy.
Today was just to see if Elani showed interest in herding. We did not continue very long, as we now need to build some smaller pens to begin training. It's going to be fun! I am so happy our girl shows such keen interest and natural instints.
I can see that working with ducks may be much more difficult than working with sheep. Or maybe it is just that I am more used to sheep and their ways. This promises to be a great learning experience!

Elani was in her second show and this time she received a certificate (serti) and was Best of Breed! Amazing how different judges evaluate the same dog so differently!

Elani was in her first show. She did very well with all the strange dogs and barking and commotion, and handled herself well in the ring. The judge gave her an evaluation of "Good" (blue colored ribbon). He said she had a nice head and expression, but poor coat quality at the time of the show.

A HUGE congratulations go to Linda Aronsen and Dancing Skies Huckleberry Butte "Berry" for winning the title "Finnmark's Mester" in agility two days in a row! This puppy is only 14 months old and shows great promise! She goes by the nickhame "Happy" because she IS! Linda's daughter trains and competes with Berry and they obviously are a great team!
